Visiting the legendary Whang-Od in Buscalan Tattoo Village was an experience my wife Katarina and I will never forget. Nestled in the remote mountains of Kalinga, Philippines, this village is home to the last and oldest mambabatok, Whang-Od, who has preserved the ancient art of traditional hand-tapped tattoos.
The Journey to Buscalan
Our adventure began with a long yet scenic drive through the winding roads of Kalinga, leading us to the trailhead. From there, we trekked through lush mountains and rice terraces, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. The journey itself was challenging but incredibly rewarding as we finally reached the village, greeted by friendly locals and the sight of intricate tattoos adorning their skin.
Meeting Whang-Od
Meeting Whang-Od was a surreal experience. Despite her age, she remains strong and continues her craft with unwavering dedication. Watching her skillfully tap ink into skin using a thorn and bamboo stick was mesmerizing. Katarina and I both chose just imaginary symbolic designs to commemorate our journey—mine representing strength and resilience, while hers embodied harmony and new beginnings.
The Buscalan Experience
Beyond getting tattooed, we immersed ourselves in the culture of the Butbut people, learning about their traditions, way of life, and the significance of their tattoos. The warmth and hospitality of the villagers made us feel at home, and we enjoyed simple yet delicious local coffee while sharing stories with fellow travelers.
Conclusion
Our trip to Whang-Od’s Buscalan Tattoo Village was more than just a travel experience—it was a spiritual and cultural journey that connected us with history, tradition, and the indomitable spirit of the Kalinga people. It’s a memory that will stay with us forever, and we highly recommend it to anyone seeking adventure and authenticity.
